Early development and allometric growth in Nannacara anomala Regan, 1905 (Perciformes: Cichlidae) under laboratory conditions Neotropical Ichthyology
Kupren,Krzysztof; Prusińska,Maja; Żarski,Daniel; Krejszeff,Sławomir; Kucharczyk,Dariusz.
Morphological development and allometric growth of laboratory reared Nannacara anomala were studied from hatching to the loss of larval characters and beginning of squamation (18 days post-hatching) at 26°C. The mean total length (TL) of larvae and juveniles increased from 3.74 mm at hatching to 9.60 mm at metamorphosis. Morphogenesis and differentiation were most intense during the first week of development. During this period (TL interval = 3.74 - 4.84 mm) there was an evident priority to enhance the feeding and swimming capabilities by promoting accelerated growth in the head and tail regions. Following this period, there was a major decrease in growth coefficients, indicating a change in growth priorities. Observations on the early development of...

Pereira,Valquíria Martins; Borges,Cristine Vanz; Brandão,Lívia Pinto; Oliveira,Larissa Santos; Souza,Cintia Paula Feitosa; Gonçalves,Zalmar Santana; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e; Santos-Serejo,Janay Almeida dos; Ferreira,Claudia Fortes; Amorim,Edson Perito; Ledo,Carlos Alberto da Silva.
The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic diversity of improved banana diploids using data from quantitative analysis and from simple sequence repeats (SSR) marker, simultaneously. The experiment was carried out with 33 diploids, in an augmented block design with 30 regular treatments and three common ones. Eighteen agronomic characteristics and 20 SSR primers were used. The agronomic characteristics and the SSR were analyzed simultaneously by the Ward-MLM, cluster, and IML procedures. The Ward clustering method considered the combined matrix obtained by the Gower algorithm. The Ward-MLM procedure identified three ideal groups (G1, G2, and G3) based on pseudo-F and pseudo-t² statistics. The dendrogram showed relative similarity between the G1...

Growth of bare root Pinus taeda, L. seedlings cultivated under five densities in nursery Scientia Agricola
Carneiro,José Geraldo de Araújo; Barroso,Deborah Guerra; Soares,Luis Maurício da Silva.
Seedlings compete for nutrients, water and light. The available area for each seedling affects their behavior related to requirements for these resources. This experiment evaluated the influence of five plant densities on the growth of bare root Pinus taeda, L. seedlings in a nursery after outplanting. The analyzed characteristics were: height (H), root collar diameter (D), H/D ratio, and dry matter weight. Higher densities stimulated H growth and the lowest densities increased D average and dry matter weight and lowered the H/D ratio. Seedlings were distributed by H, D and H/D classes. Higher densities had a larger number of seedlings in larger H classes. Larger numbers of seedlings with larger D and lower H/D ratios were found in lower densities. Ten...

Intraspecific variation in preserved specimens of the fiddler crabs Uca panacea and Uca pugilator (Decapoda: Ocypodidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bezerra,Luis E. A.; Coelho,Petrônio A..
The fiddler crabs Uca panacea Novak & Salmon, 1974 and Uca pugilator (Bosc, 1802) are closely related North American species that are sympatric along the north coast of Gulf of Mexico. Since U. panacea was described, there has been confusion in the identification these two species. Morphological differences between these two fiddlers have been pointed out in recent years, mainly regarding the presence of a pigment spot and granulations on the dorsal margin of carapace in U. pugilator. We report herein some intraspecific differences between the two species that we believe to be useful in avoiding misidentification among preserved specimens of these two fiddler crabs, such as the absence of the pigment spot in U. pugilator and the presence of the...

Albuquerque,J.A.A.; Evangelista,M.O.; Mates,A.P.K.; Alves,J.M.A.; Oliveira,N.T.; Sediyama,T.; Silva,A.A..
A phyto-sociological survey is the first step to implement integrated weed management in crops. In this study, weed occurrence was evaluated in cassava plantations in the savannah of Roraima in northern Brazil. Harvest was performed randomly 80 times in 10 crops over four seasons (January, February, March, and April 2012). The harvested plants were cut at ground level, sorted out per species, identified, quantified, and weighed on a 0.01 g precision scale. A descriptive analysis was conducted of the phyto-sociological parameters (frequency, density, abundance, total number of individuals per species, relative frequency, relative density, relative abundance and importance value index) for the collected species. A description was also made of the botanical...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 63. The eastern Asiatic races of Sitta europaea Linnaeus, 1758 Naturalis
Red'kin, Y.; Konovalova, M..
The Asiatic subspecies of Sitta europaea form an independent group of races which differ from the European subspecies by their smaller size and bill shape. Based on substantial samples of most of these taxa the present revision distinguishes 13 recognizable subspecies in the group. We remove from the group the subspecies arctica Buturlin, 1907, which is the most distinctive of all the Asiatic forms, because there is a zone of sympatry between this and S. e. baicalensis Taczanowski, 1882, where hybrid individuals may occur but if so must be extremely rare. We therefore support the elevation of arctica to full species level.
